I am honoured to be appointed as Minister for International Development and the Pacific in the Turnbull Government and look forward to working closely with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, in advancing Australia’s interests overseas.

The Pacific is our neighbourhood, and as Minister I will play an active and constructive role in building on Australia’s close historical, political and community links with the island countries and territories of the Pacific.

I will also work to ensure Australia’s $4 billion aid budget is effective in promoting prosperity, reducing poverty and enhancing stability in our region and beyond.

My time as Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs, along with my extensive experience in social policy, will complement the contribution I will make as Minister for International Development and the Pacific.

I thank the many stakeholders I have worked with in my capacity as Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs across the Attorney-General’s, Social Services and Immigration and Border Protection portfolios.
