Today I will attend a Climate Action Pacific Partnership Event in Suva hosted by the Government of Fiji. I will also hold bilateral meetings with the Government of Fiji during my visit.

This event is part of the Pacific region’s preparations for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meeting in Bonn later this year.

Pacific countries will use this event to promote practical action on climate change, by building partnerships between stakeholders and identifying initiatives to help countries implement their national climate change strategies.

Fiji’s Presidency of the 23rd Conference of Parties (COP23) of the UNFCCC is an important opportunity to highlight the Pacific’s climate change issues on the world stage.

Australia recognises the significant impact climate change will have on the Pacific.  As a close neighbour and an integral part of the region, we actively support the Pacific through COP23, including providing $6 million of funding to support Fiji’s COP23 Presidency.

Australia remains firmly committed to the Paris Agreement and joining effective global action to address climate change impacts.
