From 17 to 20 July I will travel to Kiribati, accompanied by my parliamentary colleague, Shadow Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Senator Claire Moore.
This visit will reinforce Australia’s bipartisan commitment to Kiribati and strengthen the connection between our two countries.
In Kiribati, we will highlight Australia’s continued support for economic development in the Pacific through assistance in education, health and security and our shared agenda to eliminate violence against women.
We will meet the President of Kiribati, His Excellency Taneti Maamau, to discuss common interests such as regional stability, development challenges, climate change, and other issues.
I will also open the Dai Nippon Primary School and a family health clinic and see first-hand how Australia’s support for education and the health sector is contributing to regional prosperity and stability.
The visit provides an opportunity to see Australia’s development efforts and support for Kiribati’s Development Plan 2016-19 and to meet I-Kiribati participating in training designed to increase their employment opportunities under the Northern Australia Worker Pilot Program.
I will also visit the School and Centre for Children with Special Needs, where Australia is providing support for students with disabilities to access mainstream education in government schools.
