Today I signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government's Australian Water Partnership and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Through the MoU, we will to work in partnership with the FAO to help improve water management, increase agricultural productivity, prevent hunger and malnutrition, and alleviate poverty in the Asia-Pacific region.
Australia is a significant agricultural producer and trading nation, with exports worth $44.7 billion in 2015. Like many other countries in our region, we suffer from harsh and unpredictable weather cycles and have worked to manage these conditions and maximise our agricultural products. We recognise the value of sharing our experience and expertise to benefit others in the region.
Australia is proud to deepen its cooperation with the FAO through this partnership. We have been a member of the Organization since its inception and support its goal to achieve food security for all.
We look forward to working closely with the FAO to find the best possible solutions to water management for agriculture in the Asia-Pacific region.
