Private sector actors have much to offer and much to gain in improving humanitarian response.
We already have the commitment from the Australian business community to share the private sector’s ideas, networks and assets in our region.
Australia offers its in-principle support for the UN’s Connecting Business Initiative.
Our support will help establish a Pacific business network for disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, response and recovery, in collaboration with local government, the UN and communities.
Australia’s commitment today is another pillar in our aim to support business continuity during emergencies.
It will build on our work, for example, with banks to waive remittance fees following disasters; with insurance companies to increase business and household access to low-cost insurance; and with power companies to re-establish Fiji’s power sector following Tropical Cyclone Winston this year.
Australia may be in a position to announce ‘Connecting Business Initiative’ funding and program commitments in the coming months.
