Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs Richard Marles is in Samoa today to represent Australia at the country’s 50th anniversary of independence celebrations.
"Samoa has been a firm friend to Australia and it is an honour to be here on this important occasion," Mr Marles said.
Mr Marles' visit follows the successful visit to Samoa by the Governor-General in March. During this visit the Governor-General announced that Australia’s gift to Samoa would be the refurbishment of its Parliamentary complex.
"This project underlines Australia’s support for Samoa’s democratic governance," Mr Marles said.
"It is a fitting tribute to the strength of Samoa’s democracy over the past 50 years.
"It will also enable greater transparency of, and access to, Samoa’s democratic system for the people of Samoa."
Mr Marles will also have the opportunity to engage with representatives of other countries at the official celebrations.
