Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Richard Marles, will meet the new French Minister for Overseas Territories, Victorin Lurel, in Paris today to discuss Australia-France cooperation in the Pacific.
"Australia and France share many values and interests, and we work together closely on a range of international issues. Nowhere is this cooperation more important than in the Pacific," Mr Marles said.
"France's Pacific territories play a valuable part in the region. Australia is committed to working with France to help the territories benefit from closer interaction with their neighbours."
Mr Marles will then travel to Haiti to meet the new Foreign Minister, Pierre-Richard Casimir. He will see first-hand Haiti's progress in recovering from the devastating 2010 earthquake.
"This visit is an important opportunity to hear Haiti's perspectives on its challenges and to see the tangible difference international support is making to the lives of Haitians," said Mr Marles.
The Australian Government has provided over $26 million to support Haiti's recovery and reconstruction. The Australian public also generously donated a similar amount through NGOs.
