Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs Richard Marles will visit Suriname this week to address the annual meeting of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Foreign Ministers and hold bilateral meetings with Foreign Ministers from Caribbean countries.
"Australia values its close cooperation with Caribbean countries through the UN and the Commonwealth and is committed to building its relationship with the region", Mr Marles said.
CARICOM is the peak regional body for the Caribbean, promoting economic and social integration and coordinating foreign policies among member states.
Australia established diplomatic relations with CARICOM in 2009 through a Memorandum of Understanding which promotes joint activities to reduce Caribbean countries' vulnerability to climate change, natural disasters and economic challenges.
It also promotes partnerships with key regional institutions and is building strong people-to-people linkages between Australia and the Caribbean through scholarships, fellowships and diplomatic training.
