Regional cooperation the focus of New Zealand visit

Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs Richard Marles departs today for Auckland to meet New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully, other senior MPs and member of the business and academic community.

"Australia and New Zealand work together closely on a range of international issues. Nowhere is this cooperation more important than in the Pacific," Mr Marles said.

"This visit underscores the importance that both countries attach to the role of regional institutions in fostering the stability, security and sustainable development of the Pacific region.

"I look forward to sharing perspectives on developments, challenges and opportunities in our Pacific region."

Mr Marles will also meet members of the New Zealand Opposition, Pacific MPs and other Pacific representatives and attend a roundtable on Pacific issues at the University of Auckland.
