Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Richard Marles, will make a four-day visit to the Republic of Mauritius, the Union of the Comoros and the French Department of Réunion this week.

Mr Marles said the visit will provide an opportunity to further increase engagement with Australia’s neighbours in the Indian Ocean.

“Australia is an Indian Ocean country and working in partnership with small island states and small islands is a global role Australia wishes to play,” Mr Marles said.

“We have strong people-to-people links with Mauritius, especially in education. Mauritians make up the largest African-student body in Australia with over 2,360 students in Australia in 2012.

“I am delighted Australia and Comoros also have a strong foundation on which to build relations. I signed a Memorandum of Understanding last November with the Comoros Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation to enhance cooperation at the bilateral, regional and international level.

“I also look forward to exploring areas in which Australia and Réunion can cooperate, in the context of Australia’s excellent bilateral relationship with France and the active engagement Réunion has in the Indian Ocean region,” Mr Marles said.
