Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Richard Marles, has completed a visit to Mauritius on 5 and 6 March.
Mr Marles said Australia and Mauritius shared a strong relationship underpinned by links in education and collaboration in the Indian Ocean with small island states.
“Australia is working closely with Mauritius as we prepare to take over as Chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) in November,” Mr Marles said.
“This visit has given me the opportunity to meet with the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Dr Arvin Boolell, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Mr Devanand Virahsawmy, the Secretary General of IOR-ARC, Mr KV Bhagirath and the Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission, Mr Jean Claude de l’Estrac.”
Together with Dr Boolell, Mr Marles launched a workshop on ‘Local Action to end Gender Based Violence’, and also presented Australian-funded education materials to L’Atelier Sa Nou Vize, an education support centre for underprivileged children.
With Mr Virahsawmy, Mr Marles announced the NGO recipients from Mauritius and Rodrigues who will benefit from funding under the Global Environment Fund Community Grants Program (GEF-SGP) for Climate Change Adaption, jointly funded by Australia and Mauritius.
