Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Senator the Hon Matt Thistlethwaite, will today chair the inaugural Australia-Papua New Guinea Roundtable at the Alfred Deakin Research Institute in Geelong.

"As our closest neighbour, and one of our most important international partners, it is critical that we explore the full potential of our relationship with Papua New Guinea," Senator Thistlethwaite said.

"The Roundtable brings together politicians, business leaders, journalists and academics from both countries to generate fresh thinking on our bilateral engagement including trade and investment opportunities, security cooperation and people to people links.

"I look forward to chairing the Roundtable as one of my first official duties as Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs," Senator Thistlethwaite said.

The Australia-Papua New Guinea Roundtable builds on existing Government initiatives to develop a better understanding in Australia of contemporary Papua New Guinea, our bilateral relationship and future together.

Other initiatives include the Papua New Guinea Symposium, hosted by the Alfred Deakin Research Institute, the Papua New Guinea Independence Day Oration and an Emerging Leaders Dialogue which will be held later this year.

The Roundtable is being co-sponsored by The Australian National University, Deakin University and the Australian Government.
