…So clearly all of this evacuation and resettlement will be an expensive exercise and aid groups and NGOs continue to call for financial assistance and advisors on the ground. This week the Australian Government pledged a further $2 million to the effort on top of $3.55 million provided since October last year in two instalments. I spoke to Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and she told me where the money will be going.
So this third package of assistance will comprise up to a million dollars to support basically the government’s response efforts including logistics associated with the evacuation, the provision of health and education services and of course merging infrastructure needs and also up to a million dollars to be delivered through our local and Australian NGO partners with a particular focus on the protection of vulnerable people, people who need psycho-social support, livelihood shelter, water and sanitation services and early recovery.
Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Concetta Fierravanti-Wells there.
