I particularly acknowledge the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, including its Chair, Ms Kateryna Argyrou, and the Ukrainian Council of NSW for bringing people together for this occasion.
It is a privilege to join you at Bondi as we mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
On 24 August 1991, Ukraine declared its independence and affirmed the right of the Ukrainian people to determine their own future.
Thirty-five years later, Independence Day is both a celebration of Ukraine’s culture, identity and hard-won sovereignty, and a moment to honour those defending Ukraine’s freedom today.
That meaning is felt deeply here in Australia.
You have family, friends and loved ones in Ukraine.
You carry the daily concern that comes with each new attack and the enduring hope that Ukraine will achieve the just and lasting peace its people deserve.
Australia stands with you.
We stand with Ukraine because sovereignty matters.
Territorial integrity matters.
The right of every nation to determine its own future matters.
Australia is steadfast in its support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion.
We have committed more than AUD 1.8 billion for Ukraine, including an additional AUD 100 million contribution to NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List for critical military equipment, announced in June 2026.
We have imposed over 1,800 sanctions on Russia and its supporters and listed over 250 Russian Shadow Fleet vessels used to circumvent sanctions.
Australia supports all efforts to achieve a peace deal for Ukraine that ends Russia’s war, and safeguards security and stability in Europe.
A lasting peace should uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and ensure Russia cannot renew its aggression.
To the Ukrainian-Australian community, your advocacy, generosity and commitment have helped Australians understand what is at stake.
You have supported those affected by this war, strengthened the bonds between Australia and Ukraine, and ensured Ukraine’s story continues to be heard.
Ukrainians have made a valuable contribution to Australia throughout their long and proud history in this country.
Today, as blue and yellow is carried along Bondi Beach, we are reminded that Ukraine’s independence is not only marked in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and Odesa.
It is marked wherever Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine gather in solidarity.
To all Ukrainians, to those in Ukraine, to those here in Australia, and to those across the world: Australia stands with you.
