Africa Down Under
Today I will address the Africa Down Under conference in Perth on Australia's expanding engagement with countries in Africa.
Every year, the Africa Down Under conference attracts large numbers of Ministers, senior officials and business executives from across the African continent to our shores. It highlights the positive role that Australian mining and resources expertise can play in the relationship between Australia and African nations.
Africa's global influence is increasing, with a growing population projected to represent a quarter of the world's population by 2050.
Strengthening our existing community and business links with Africa has never been more important.
Trade between Australia and countries on the African continent has grown rapidly, almost doubling to $11 billion since 2016-17 and Australian mining companies invest an estimated $40 billion across Africa.
Sustainable development and high Environmental, Social and Governance standards are at the heart of Australia's resource industry, both domestically and in Africa.
The conference includes visiting ministers and delegations from across Africa and a keynote address from President of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi.
