Visit to Chile and Peru

  • Media Release

Today I will travel to Chile and Peru to promote Australia's engagement with Latin America.

My visit to the region is the first by an Australian minister since 2019.

In Peru, I will lead Australia's delegation to the 52nd General Assembly of the Organisation of American States (OAS) where Australia will engage as a Permanent Observer.

I will use this opportunity to deepen Australia's engagement with OAS member states, and advocate Australia's vision of a rules-based international system and a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Australia's interests in Latin America are diverse and growing.

There is increasing collaboration between Australian and Latin American industry on the clean energy transition.

I am looking forward to meeting businesses operating in Chile and Peru to discuss opportunities to share knowledge and work toward solutions to meet our shared emissions reduction goals.

Australia, Chile and Peru also share a commitment to strengthening the rights of our First Nations peoples. During my visit I will listen to and discuss perspectives on this work as part of the Australian Government's commitment to embed First Nations perspectives at the heart of Australian foreign policy.
