Today, I will travel to Fiji to represent Australia at the 5th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Women Leaders Meeting.
The meeting will bring together Pacific leaders to advance gender equality across government, civil society and the private sector.
As a Pacific nation, Australia prioritises relationships that ensure the Blue Pacific is an Ocean of Peace and equipped to respond to the challenges of our time.
Gender equality is fundamental to a peaceful, stable and prosperous Pacific. Where women are free from violence and fear, able to access education and economic opportunities, and empowered to participate in civic life, whole communities are better off.
This meeting of women leaders underscores the enduring PIF commitment to advancing gender equality and protecting the rights of women and girls across the Pacific, at a pivotal moment globally where gains are under threat.
Addressing gender-based violence and removing barriers that hold women back are powerful investments towards shaping a safer and more prosperous region for all.
Australia’s participation in key regional meetings is vital to advancing our shared interests. We are one of the founding members of PIF, which plays a vital role in a stronger and more united region.
While in Fiji I will also meet with Pacific Leaders, to further discuss our shared priorities for our Pacific region.
My visit reflects our strong commitment and sustained ministerial engagement with Pacific partners.
