Restoring climate resilient critical infrastructure in Niue
The Australian Government will provide $1 million (AUD) to the Broadcasting Corporation of Niue (BCN) to repair studios and broadcast rooms damaged by fire in 2020.
In line with Australia's development policy, this funding will enable BCN Studios ongoing media presence in Niue –which supports public debate, democratic norms and robust governance.
This arrangement demonstrates Australia's enduring partnership with Niue, underpinned by close cooperation on development priorities, strong community relationships and shared democratic values.
Australia is committed to helping strengthen climate resilient critical infrastructure in Niue and across the disaster-prone Pacific region. BCN Studios plays a critical role in Niue's National Disaster Plan by broadcasting emergency information during natural disasters, such as cyclones and earthquakes, through its Natural Disaster Alert System.
Australia is also building on its proud history of supporting a strong, independent Pacific media through initiatives under the Australia-Pacific Broadcasting and Media Partnership, including expanding access to more content, increasing media capacity building, and boosting industry connections.
I look forward to continuing Australia's strong partnership with Niue as they approach the 50th anniversary celebrating self-governance on Constitution Day this October.
